Give Narcan to anyone who may be overdosing. Benzos and sedatives usually come mixed with opioids, and Narcan reverses the opioid part.
A scheduled job runs every Monday. It refreshes the official death counts from the CDC and San Francisco open-data APIs, then searches for new reports, checks each one against its source, and adds those that qualify. Reports added in the past week carry a yellow ring on the map.
Every report links to the organization that produced the information: health departments, medical examiners, the CDC and DEA, the Federal Register, attorneys general, police and courts, and drug-checking programs. News coverage alone does not qualify.
A few dozen reports of different kinds would make a heat map of where news happens, not where people overdose. Each point is one report, placed approximately. For how many people are dying, use the official counts above.
The data files are public: incidents.json and trend.json. Official counts come from CDC state counts, CDC county counts and the San Francisco Medical Examiner. Spotted a mistake? Open an issue.
